UNIT GAME –Sunday, October 14

UNIT GAME: Mark your calendar for the Unit Game on Sunday October 14. And for those who are planning ahead, the November Unit Game is on November 18 and the December Unit Game – also our Holiday Party and Annual Charity Game – will be held on December 9.

AUGUST UNIT GAME RESULTS: Seventeen tables vied in the August Unit Game. The top “points” went to: 1st, Eddie Gruber & Diane Starbuck; 2nd, Marcie Evans & Jan Wagner; 3rd, Bee Kinman & Betty Barton; 4th, Jack Biggs & John Biggs and 5th, Donna Wenberg & George Thompson. The top Flt C pairs were: 1st, Jack Biggs & John Biggs; 2nd, Carol Murakoshi & Sean Lui, 3rd, Sue & Keith Hafen. Carol Murakoshi and Earl Van Der Vord were in charge of refreshments and Earl’s spaghetti was a big hit. Thank you to them and any others who helped.

NEW STATUS & NEW MEMBERS: Roderic Eslinger, Phyllis Greenstein, Betty Jackson, Doreen Maes and Melanie Smith have just joined our Unit. Welcome!

Congratulations to new Junior Masters, Howard Smith and Stan Tseng. Also to Doug Preble, Bill Rawlings and Nancy Speizer, new Sectional Masters. Harry Christopolous and Donald Hohl are new Regional Masters. And a round of applause for our newest Life Master, Carmen Gross. Well done to all of you!

               70+% GAMES through 9/15: We have four 70+% games this reporting period. Raymond Mack & Mark Raggio had a 71.06%; Frank Bartlett & Cory Hand, 71.08%; Joyce Siegel & Larry Slutzky; 74.31% and Gail Mann & Anne Munchow had a 75% game. Nice playing!

THIS MONTH AT THE CLUB: We start off October with a week – October 7 -13 – of Sectionally Rated Club Appreciation Games. These games pay 5% gold, up to .25 point. The monthly Team Game will be part of that week on Monday, October 8 at 7pm. On October 23, 25 and 27 the 12:30 games will be Membership Games. They will pay extra points! Just a reminder that the schedule and results can be found on the club website (www.longbeachbridge.com) if you aren’t sure when the special games are scheduled. GET WELL & CONDOLENCES: We missed get well wishes to Sam Abramson last month and hear he’s doing much better. Our sincere condolences go out to Maruxa Cargill and her family on the passing of her husband, Norm.

THE ROSTER: The sheet with your information should be available at the club by the time this is published. Check your information and correct it if necessary. Hopefully, we will have a new roster by the holiday – in time to address your holiday greeting cards.

CHARITY GRANT: Our Unit was awarded $4,000 – one of the five charity grants that the district divided from the $20,000 they received from the ACBL Charity Foundation. Bravo to our Board for applying for and receiving this grant for our charity, the Long Beach WomenShelter. Our unit has supported this charity for over twenty years and while we give small and large contributions over the year, this grant will go a long way toward helping this worthwhile charity continue their good work. We are thrilled to have been one of the five units that were awarded this money.

THIS AND THAT: The Labor Day Potluck Picnic was a wild success. The dishes kept coming in and those who came early were too full for some of the later victuals and those that came late missed some of the early goodies but no one went hungry. The table was groaning under the weight of all the dishes you good cooks brought. With twenty-nine tables we had lots of food, lots of fun and lots of bridge! Thanks to everyone who participated in this potluck.
