UNIT GAME Sunday, January 15

Lunch at 1pm – Game at 1:30 pm

JANUARY UNIT GAME: Now that the holidays are over, we can get back to the serious bridge playing. Make sure you mark Jan. 15 with an asterisk and call your favorite partner to make a date to play in the Unit game. Times are the regular times – lunch at 1pm and game at 1:30.

NOVEMBER UNIT GAME RESULTS: We had eighteen tables in two sections for the November Unit Game. The OA winners were: 1st, Eileen Neisen & Julia Stephen; 2nd, Sandra Pickering & Stephen Lowe; 3^rd, Bea & John Bralliar; 4th, Bill Linsenbard & John Fox and tied for 5th through 7th, Phyllis Parker & Bob Mault, Bob Goodman & Delores Backlund and Paul Pettler & Al Mastron. Steve Sulzby and Bernard Mann were the “caterers.” Thanks to anyone else who assisted.

NEW STATUS & NEW MEMBERS: We warmly welcome Monica Gettis and Hank Neubert as our newest members. The latest status report for December listed the newest: Junior Masters: Jean Ingram, Bonnie O’Donnell and Bill Rawlings; Club Master, Linda Mitchell; Sectional Masters: Tom Skidmore and Mike Ullman; Regional Masters: Anna Dawson and Frank Seipp; NABC Master: Keith Hafen and Bronze Life Masters: Irene Crampton and Paul Reichenbach. A big “atta boy (or girl)" to everyone who moved up that status ladder another rung.

70+% GAMES: We were t-h-i-s close to being in the 70% game drought again until Jo Daigle and Frank Bartlett scored a 70.15% game. There seems to be either feast or famine. I was afraid I’d have to take this heading out this month!

THIS MONTH AT THE CLUB: Inflation has hit the club! Card fees are increasing to $8 for regular games starting Jan. 1. A week of Championship Games will be held from Sunday, Jan. 8 through Saturday, Jan. 14 – regular prices, regular schedule. The monthly Stratified Open Team Game is scheduled for 7:00 pm on Monday, Jan 9.

CONDOLENCES & GET WELL: Barbara Balowitz was out “horsing” around and fell off her horse. At this writing, she is home from the hospital recuperating and appreciative of all the cards and calls she has received. She wants company so give her a call.

UNIT BOARD: Two new members have joined the board, Jan Wagner and Frank Seipp, Jr. replacing Peggy Waite and Bernard Mann as board members. Thanks to Peggy and Bernard for your service and hard work as board members. Welcome to Jan and Frank. The rest of the board remains the same including the officers with the exception that Merlin Hanson has turned the presidential reins over to John Killian. The rest of the officers, Arnie Maddox, VP, Carol Murakoshi, Sec. and Donna Wenberg, Treas. will continue in those capacities.

THIS AND THAT: Thank you to all the members who donated to the WomenShelter. Frank Bartlett, Charity Chairman, reports that we collected almost $3,500 between the generous donations and card fees for the Dec. Unit game. (Results will be posted in next month’s column.) The donation box will remain at the desk and donations to our charity are welcome any time. Dig in your pockets for spare change while you’re waiting to pay your card fees and put it in the box. It will add up quickly!

My holiday this year was bittersweet. Sweet because for the first time in many years, I got to spend it with my daughter, her husband and my son – bitter because my daughter and her husband left for their new home in Australia on Christmas day. Anyone traveling to the Great Barrier Reef and wants to sail, scuba or snorkel that “eighth wonder of the world” should contact me before you go and I will give you all the details of the sailing business my daughter and her husband have purchased in Cairns, Australia.
